The temple of Luxor, located in the heart of ancient Thebes, was essentially built under the 18th and 19th Egyptian dynasties. It was consecrated to the god Amun under his two aspects of Amun-Ra (Ra was considered the god of the sky, the god of the sun and the origin of life in Egyptian mythology).

The oldest parts visible today date from Amenhotep III and Ramesses II. Later Shabako, Nectanebo I and the Ptolemaic dynasty added new elements.

During the Roman period, the temple was partially transformed into a military camp. The building, one of the best preserved in the New Egyptian Empire, retains numerous structures.

In addition to the great pylon, visitors can pass through two large peristyles and the monumental colonnade linking these two courtyards. The sanctuary itself, the residence of the Amun of Opet, as well as the rooms that still have a large part of their tiles.
